The Challenge

A documentary that demonstrates a new global approach for software development was needed by IBM. Forty hours of material, arriving from all corners of the world, were arriving at SFPG as it was being shot. Both Digital Betacam and film that needed to be transferred were logged, viewed and assembled while the producer and director were still overseas. The task of logging and assembling so much footage was daunting because of the extremely tight time-line.

The Approach

Interviews of both IBM employees and end users were conducted on three continents, at locations including the United States, China, Latvia and India. They discuss how a global economy continues to shift in ways no one can predict, yet the need to accurately anticipate future directions and meet them are crucial. IBM's approach of seamlessly integrating and developing software for a global economy is discussed and offered as a solution.

SFPG refined over 40 hours of footage to create the five minute video. The footage which was shot in a variety of ways (some on 16mm, most on digital video cassettes) had to be transferred to digital beta. The visual style is tied together with a title treatment that seperates the interviews created in Flame and composited in the D1 suite.
