Good Comic Timing..... As with any joke, good editorial timing was essential to this funny trailer about different film styles and a crabby director who's impossible to please. We open to bucolic scenes dissolving to a hokey-looking couple strolling hand in hand through tall, windswept grasses a la Merchant Ivory. Meanwhile the voice-over waxes lyrical about Mill Valley's natural beauty. Suddenly, a harsh voice interjects "No, no, no!" and we cut to an audio suite where the pretend 'director' of this trailer grouses at the voice-over talent to give a more forceful read.
The trailer's tenor instantly changes and becomes an action sequence: A frantic moviegoer panics over the umpteen choices of films being screened; hordes of festival fans stampede a theater as blockbuster 3D chrome titles zoom out of the center. However, back in the suite, the 'director' rants again, now urging the talent to make the piece lighter.
The trailer about-faces once more, this time to a plucky romance of a boy (filmmaker) meets girl (film buff ) over Peet's coffee. Still dissatisfied, the 'director' now demands a classic touch. We cut to a documentary-style reminiscent montage celebrating the last two decades of the film festival's achievements. The 'director' decides to call it a day and grumbles as the credits roll.
Two spots lifted from the trailer were cut and composited into two :30 commercials. One emerged from an action sequence and the other was lifted from the montage.
Techniques
Brent Herrington used Avid's Film Composer to cut the piece and then readied it for feature film release. Paul Folger of the Design Group at sfpg created the chrome titles in the action sequence on the Flame.
Carlos Cabrales layered the IMC footage of posters and stills from past festivals.
